In the 1960’s many believed that the future of Denmark would be shopping in large shopping malls outside the city centers. In Taastrup just vest of Copenhagen, they planned “City 2”, which is a massive shopping center which for many years were the largest in Denmark.
Planned as a shopping center with almost no customers who should arrive by train, bike or on foot which is the norm in large parts of Copenhagen which is not a place to locate your firm if your firm depends of easy access to to logitics because there is a war on cars on large parts of Sealand.
In fact it is difficult to find a person from Fyen or Jutland which is not of the opinion that the speed limits were forced upon the nation to make the island of Sealand to feel bigger than it is because the travel times are as slow as in hilly countries like Nepal.
Danes dislike leaving their local community. They look suspiciously at strangers who come from outside their local community and might only include them if the guests are willing to sit down and drink with them. “Hygge” as it is called in Danish and a word you cannot not easy translate to other languages. So the idea of driving many kilometers to Copenhagen in order to shop is not a concept you can sell in Denmark. In fact shopping centers in Denmark are targeted for the local customers.
In few cases they are not but then they are located on order border to the parts of Denmark called “The Rotten Banana”. Wasteland where nothing happen like Lolland, Falster, all Fyen beside the main city Odense and the areas long the highway across it and the western and southern part of Jutland. A shopping center in the town of Naestved on Sealand is such an example. So why should people from the southern island drive all the way to Copenhagen, when they can settle with driving half the distance and get the same shopping experience?
So City 2 never became the expected destination for the Hill-billies from the Southern Islands, they planned. So it kind of suffered while the city expanded around it. Then it got a second chance when a main station for long-distance trains opened 500 meters from it. But again they failed to market themselves to the many commuters who could drive to the shopping center, park their cars and then take the train into the city-center and shop in the center when they collect their cars after work.
So more recently they simply gave up and converted parking space to area for residential buildings hoping to make the shopping center a local shopping mall only for the local community and block it from outside visitors by asking a private parking firm to harass the customers if they arrive by car just as many neighborhoods in the Copenhagen area do because some citizens simply do not understand that if you invite people from other cities to your local neighborhood, it bothers the neighbors who might not be that social. We are after all living in the country who invented the Law of Jante. In Denmark success is not to be admired, not in the job-area, not by having a lot of friends if they are from out of town.
So City 2 is not a place to visit if you arrive by car. It is not something which makes it an area where you feel welcome. It was in that kind of closed community the terrible double homicide took place this morning.
When I heard of it this morning my first thought was that it properly was gang-related with hired goons coming from Sweden as it has happened too often but it soon became clear that it was just another debate about taste of music which ended in tragedy. During these times where the Danish population suffer like no other population on this earth because we both have to work until death when retirement seems to have been abolished and the politicians are working on removing national holidays, many spend the time listening to what they tend to call music.
Rap-music has found its way to Denmark and the culture surrounding it sadly also. They try really hard to look like gangsters in order to sell their music and when we in Denmark have gun-laws, then they have to settle with carrying knives instead. There have been so many incidents in 2023 already where knives are involved but this double homicide is the first one this year where two lives were lost.
Of course we cannot prevent the people who make rap-music market their business like it is done in other countries flashing a criminal style of life. We cannot prevent foreign influence either. It was what is was. A terrible tragedy but also something which is just as it was expected to end up.
It is really just one of those things which were supposed to happen.
So sad!
