100 years birthdayparty with a dark shadow resting over it

In Uncategorized on May 14, 2013 at 18:51

So Haldor Topsøe has reached 100 years and they are celebrating his birthday.

He might have established a firm recognized internationally. He might have support something or someone abroad, but this industry legacy had its cost.

His attack on the danish form for humor and jokes has created an environment of fear. Many times people in the town where his firm is located has been forced to shut their windows and hide inside their houses because various forms of chemicals had slipped out into the local environment.

Some years ago a employee who had been working almost two decades in his firm found a work paper online from the Danish immigration offices and he mailed to some co-workers. He was fired and the courts uphealt this awful decision despite the fact that the employee wasn’t responsible for the document to leave the firm.

So the employee lost his job for something most Danes support. I cannot stand to hear Haldor Topsøe’s name due to the shame he has inflicted on the core of our culture.

  1. Hi Rotsne
Interesting blog – you have however not cited any sources of your accusations. Haldor himself was very fond of danish humor and had a very dark and, well, danish sense himself.

I think you are referring to the incident in 2007 where yellow smoke was seen from the facilities in Frederikssund. According to authorities it was brief and non-toxic:

On the other hand Topsoe is one of the companies in the world that has done the most on reducing pollution and co2 emissions:

The firing of the employee mentioned was a very hard. The email was meant as a joke but was very racist in its contents. Since we don’t know the full story of where the email ended (with a topsøe email signature probably) i cannot say whether a warning would have been more in place.
However Danish High Court ruled in favor of Topsøes decision (the company – not the person):

I value your perspective but i think your judgement of the man behind the company is a bit too harsh.

    Regards
    Michael

  2. I cannot understand why the socalled joke was racist and it should not lead to losing a job.

On the other hand now where he is dead, I will just say that I am sorry for the loss his family has experienced.

I guess that he despite this misstep in the firing case did some good for the town where his plant was running.
